Monday – TSW determine the measurable properties of matter and appropriate metric units (7.12.spi.1) [i.e. weight, mass, volume, density, size (length, width, height), temperature]. (Teacher led demonstrations: taking up space, meniscus.)

Homework: Page 479 – illustrate figure 8 “Differences Between Mass and Weight”. Be sure to include every statement in each box. Place this chart in your blue folder. Study your class notes.

Tuesday – TSW determine the measurable properties of matter and appropriate metric units (7.12.spi.1) [i.e. weight, mass, volume, density, size (length, width, height), temperature]. (Teacher led demonstration: volume/mass.) TTW review chapter 18 section 1 in the science workbook.

Homework: Write a short science fiction story in which matter does not behave in the ways described in chapter 18 section 1. Consider what life would be like in this kind of universe. Some examples: a universe where gravity does not exist; a universe where objects repulse rather than attract one another; a universe where inertia becomes greater as mass decreases.

Wednesday – TSW use appropriate tools to measure and compare mass, volume, and the length of various objects (7.12.tpi.1). TSW calculate the volume of common classroom items. Study your class notes.

Thursday – TSW give examples of matter’s different properties and describe how density is used to identify different substances. (Activity: 20 Questions)

Homework: Study your class notes and complete chapter 18 section 2 in your science workbook. There will be a classwork assessment over chapter 18 sections 1 and 2 next Tuesday.

Friday – TSW compare physical and chemical properties and explain what happens to matter during physical and chemical changes.

Monday – WINTER BREAK

Tuesday – WINTER BREAK

Wednesday – TTW review classroom policies, procedures and expectations for science class. TSW complete a T-CAP based pre-assessment on matter and its properties.

Homework: Review your study guide over plants (anatomy, pollination, fertilization, wind pollination, animal pollination) and the comparison and contrast of asexual and sexual reproduction as well as the advantages of sexual & asexual reproduction.

Thursday – TTW conduct a review of the information on tomorrow’s assessment over sexual vs. asexual reproduction & plants.

Friday – TSW complete a T-CAP based assessment over the unit on plants and sexual vs. asexual reproduction. Following the assessment, TSW review chapter 18 section 1 and complete directed reading workbook pages for chapter 18 section 2.

Monday – TSW classify organisms as reproducing sexually or asexually (7.4.tpi.3).

Tuesday – TSW complete the classification activity from yesterday and create a study guide for the final assessment over asexual VS. sexual reproduction & plants.

Over the holiday break, please be sure to study your notes on plants (anatomy, pollination, fertilization, wind pollination, animal pollination) and the comparison and contrast of asexual and sexual reproduction as well as the advantages/disadvantages of sexual and asexual reproduction. We will review this information when we return from the break and there will be a quiz. Remember this information is not in the book so DON’T FORGET TO TAKE YOUR FOLDERS HOME.

EARN EXTRA CREDIT FOR THE 3rd NINE WEEKS: During the break, I am sure that you (or your parents) will do lots of baking and make plenty of big breakfast omelets. Save your STYROFOAM egg cartons and bring them with you when you return to class next year, we will need them for an exciting lab. (You might even ask your neighbors for their egg cartons as well.) I will award 5 extra credit points for up to two (2) egg carton donations (please feel free to donate more). I will also award points for any of the following donations for lab activities:

Items Needed for Lab Activities

5 points - 1 STYROFOAM egg carton (Without your generous egg carton donations, we will not have the containers needed to conduct the chemical changes lab.)

5 points - 2 boxes of baking SODA
5 points - 1 box of corn starch
5 points - 1 can of baking POWDER
5 points - 1 can of Dominoes Sugar
5 points - Ping Pong Balls (used only)
5 points - 1 package of colored pipe cleaners
5 points - 1 roll of scotch tape
5 points - 2 glue sticks
5 points - 1 box of rubber gloves
5 points - 1 large empty coffee can
5 points - 2 packages of 3” x 5” index cards
5 points - 1 - 2lb. bag of flour
5 points - 1 jar of yeast
5 points - 1 roll of masking tape
5 points - 1 bag of marbles
5 points - 1 bag of round balloons

Monday – TSW match a flower part with its reproductive function (7.4.spi.1).
TSW analyze the parts of a flower and determine how they function in plant reproduction (7.4.tpi.1). REMEMBER, THIS INFORMATION IS NOT IN THE TEXTBOOK.
Tuesday – TSW distinguish between sexual and asexual methods of reproduction (7.4.spi.2).
TSW recognize a variety of pollination methods and associated floral adaptations (7.4.spi.4).

Homework: Read chapter 18 section 1 and complete workbook pages 145 – 147.

Wednesday – TTW conduct a review of the information covered Monday and Tuesday. There will be a quiz over this material this Friday.

Thursday – TSW classify organisms as reproducing sexually or asexually (7.4.tpi.3). TSW distinguish between sexual and asexual methods of reproduction (7.4.spi.2). TSW recognize advantages and disadvantages of sexual and asexual reproduction (7.4.spi.3).
