Content Standard: 1. 0 Cell Structure and Function

Monday – TTW review Ch. 2 Sec. 2 (The simple Bare Necessities of Life) and provide students with an overview of the cell cycle in preparation for exploring the chemistry of life. TTW introduce Ch. 2 Sec. 3 (The Chemistry of Life). TSW complete reinforcement activities (Amazing Discovery & The Pathway of Life).

Homework: Complete the directed reading worksheets for Chapter 2. & collect the nutrition labels from 2 –3 food items in your home this week. Labels are due by Friday.

Enrichment: When the human body is unable to make a necessary protein, the result is often a disease. Hemophilia and diabetes are two conditions caused by missing or defective proteins. Prepare a report on the cause of and the treatment for one of these conditions. Your information should include the specific protein that is lacking, a brief description of how the conditions affect the body and the role of DNA in the disease.

You must write the report (I will not accept a printed page from the web) and give a brief oral report of your findings. Due Monday, September 4th.

Tuesday – TTW review the directed reading worksheets for chapter 2 and give a demonstration of the cell’s permeability. TSW illustrate the cell membrane and compete the sections review on page 45.

Wednesday – TSW take notes on the Chemistry of Life.

Homework: Study your class notes. (Parents: The information we are studying now will be a critical part of your child’s ability to comprehend future lesson. Please make sure that your child studies his or her notes even when there is not written homework.)

Thursday – TSW complete notes on the Chemistry of Life. TTW review directed reading worksheets over the content and TSW complete a reinforcement assignment over this content.

Homework: Study your class notes.

Friday – TSW work in cooperative learning groups to construct a concept map of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. TSW use the concept map to complete an assessment of how each food source is used by a cell.

Test: Chapter 2 Test Next Friday

Monday – TTW conduct a review of last weeks’ lesson on The Six Characteristics of All Living Things (6 C of ALT). TSW record notes on the 6 C of ALT in their blue folders. Homework: TSW review his or her notes in preparation for Thursday’s quiz over the 6 C of ALT.

Tuesday – TSW complete the section review on page 39 in preparation for Thursday’s quiz over the 6 C of ALT. TTW assign a creative writing assignment on the 6 C of ALT to be presented tomorrow (students will have an opportunity to begin this assignment in class). TSW choose to create a poem, song/rap, short story or letter to a friend in which he or she will apply the concepts learned from the 6 C of ALT. The rubric is as follows: comprehension (50 pts.), spelling (10pts.), neatness (10 pts.) and presentation (30 pts.) Homework: TSW complete his or her creative writing assignment.

Wednesday – TSW present his or her creative writing assignment to the class. This exercise is intended to allow TT to assess student mastery as well as give students an opportunity to experience the concepts presented in a variety of formats. Homework: TSW prepare for tomorrow’s quiz.

Thursday – TTW TSW read Ch. 2 Section 2 and complete the section review on page 41

Friday – TSW review his/her lab safety test and research correct answers for items not mastered. TSW submit these corrections by the end of the class period. TTW distribute student workbooks and students having few corrections to make will begin directed reading worksheets for chapter

Monday – TTW review class procedures and teach students how to set up their blue folders for success in science class. Homework: TSW review the lab safety procedures handout and read textbook pages XXVI – XXIX. There will be a lab safety quiz this Thursday.

Tuesday – TTW question students regarding laboratory safety procedures from last night’s reading. TSW create an organism and make a list of all of the characteristics that make the organism what it is. TSW share his or her list with group members then each student will select his or her top six characteristics and place them in a graphic organizer given by TT. Homework: TSW review the lab safety procedure handout and textbook pages XXVI – XXIX. TSW should come to class prepared to ask questions about any procedure he or she does not understand.

Wednesday – TTW review lab safety procedures with students in preparation for tomorrow’s lab safety quiz. TSW contrast his/her organism with those of group members. The goal is to identify characteristics that will support the life of every organism represented in the group. Following group discussion, TTW facilitate a whole class contrast of characteristics.

Thursday – TSW demonstrate his or her mastery of basic Laboratory Safety Rules through a written assessment. TTW teach students how to use block style graphic organizers for note taking. TSW prepare his or her blue folder for taking notes on the six characteristics of all living things.

Friday – TTW use student schema to help TS construct notes on the six characteristics of all living things.

Monday – All students will remain in homeroom for the first half of the day. During the second half of the day, TSW have an opportunity to meet his or her science teacher and receive a brief overview of the class.

Tuesday –. TTW begin a thorough explanation of class procedures and expectations.

Wednesday – TTW continue to explain class procedures and expectations.

Thursday – TTW review class procedures and expectations followed by an apple observation activity that will emphasize the importance of giving a clear account of observations made during scientific exploration.

Friday – TTW work in cooperative learning groups to compose a list of what they deem to be the 7 most important lab safety rules. TSW use schema to create the list. Following this activity, TTW distribute a list of lab safety procedures for students to review. Homework: TSW review his or her lab safety procedures handout.
